FACIAL FILLERS
Facial fillers (otherwise known as dermal fillers) are injectable gels used to restore or add volume to the face.1,2 Fillers vary in density (thickness), which determines the area they can be used in, whether that is to provide lift or contouring, create symmetry, fill in lines or deep folds, or enhance a particular feature such as the lips.1–3
Fillers can be permanent or temporary.1,2 The JUVÉDERM® range of fillers are non-permanent4 and can have durable results (up to 9–24 months, depending on the particular JUVÉDERM® filler used and the areas treated)5,6 but your body is able to metabolise it and eventually the results will fade.4
HA is a naturally occurring sugar found in the body that maintains the moisture in our skin by binding with water molecules.4,7 It’s found in many human tissues including connective tissues and fluid around the joints,4,8 but approximately 50% is found in our skin.8
HA facial fillers contain a manufactured form of hyaluronic acid.7 They are injected directly into the skin and can reduce the signs of ageing.1,2 They can also add volume, to either restore volume lost over time1,2 or to provide enhancement.3
As we age, our skin renews itself more slowly.9 A dramatic loss of HA from specific layers of the skin can be seen in aged skin10 as well a loss of collagen and elastin, all of which can result in dry, thin skin and the appearance of wrinkles and folds.9,10 HA fillers can add lasting, albeit temporary, moisture to the skin.4
